Live Poultry For Sale — Buying & Cooking Guide

Choosing live poultry for sale means matching the bird to what you actually want — eggs, meat, or company in the yard.

What to look for when you buy live poultry

Healthy birds are bright-eyed and alert, with clean vents, smooth legs and full, glossy feathers. They should move freely and hold their wings tight to the body. Ask what the bird has been vaccinated against — for point-of-lay hens in NSW that is normally Marek's disease and often Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis. Point-of-lay pullets are sold sexed (female); straight-run meat birds are not.

Settling new birds in

Keep new arrivals separate from an existing flock for two to three weeks to watch for illness. Give them a draught-free coop with roughly 1m² of run per bird, clean water, shell grit and a feed matched to their stage — chick starter, grower/pullet developer, or a layer ration with added calcium once they reach point of lay. Expect a week or two of settling before the first egg. For a plain-English rundown of backyard poultry health and biosecurity, the NSW DPI poultry pages are a good starting point.

Live poultry is collected from our farm partner by appointment or delivered within a limited radius of Sydney — it is arranged separately from the cold-chain meat run.

Live Poultry For Sale — Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'point of lay' mean?

Point-of-lay (POL) pullets are 16–20 weeks old — either just started laying or within a few weeks of it. They're past the fragile brooder stage and are the easiest way to start a laying flock.

How do I collect live birds — do you deliver?

Live poultry is collected from our farm partner by appointment, or delivered within a limited radius of Sydney for a fee — arranged separately from the cold-chain meat run. The $300 site minimum order still applies. We'll confirm options when you order.

Are the hens vaccinated and sexed?

Point-of-lay hens and pullets are sold as females (sexed) and vaccinated against Marek's disease and typically Newcastle/IB, unless a listing says otherwise. Straight-run (unsexed) meat birds are noted as such.

Is there a minimum number of birds?

Chickens are flock animals and shouldn't be kept singly, so most listings have a minimum of two or three birds. Bantam and rare breeds may vary.

What breeds do you stock?

Commonly ISA Brown and Hyline (brown-egg layers), Australorp and Plymouth Rock (dual-purpose), fast-growing meat birds, and a rotating selection of bantams. Availability is seasonal — contact us for the current list.
