Meat Birds & Table Chickens

Meat birds for sale are birds raised for the table — fast-growing meat strains and slower dual-purpose breeds. They are sold straight-run (unsexed, roughly half male and half female), which for table birds does not matter.

Fast strain or dual-purpose?

Fast-growing meat strains reach 2–3kg live weight in 7–9 weeks on a meat-bird ration and give the tender, plump carcass most people expect. Dual-purpose breeds take 14–20 weeks, forage well, and finish leaner and firmer with more flavour — better for a slow roast or the pot than a quick BBQ.

Raising and processing meat birds

Brood day-olds at around 32°C, dropping a few degrees a week until they are feathered. Feed a starter then grower meat-bird ration (20–22% then 18–19% protein) with constant clean water, and give fast strains restricted feeding overnight from about week three to reduce leg and heart problems. Fast birds are usually processed at 7–9 weeks before their frame outgrows their legs. We can point you to licensed small-scale processors near Sydney, or supply older birds already grown out. Feeding costs and carcass yield

As a rough budget, a fast-strain meat bird eats roughly 4–5kg of feed to reach a 2kg dressed carcass — a feed-conversion ratio close to 2:1 — so the running cost is mostly feed, and buying a good meat-bird ration rather than layer pellets pays for itself in growth. Dual-purpose breeds convert less efficiently (closer to 3:1) and take twice as long, so the trade-off is feed cost and time against flavour and foraging. Plan your batch size around freezer space: six fast birds processed together will fill a large chest freezer drawer, and it is far less work to do one processing day than several.

Welfare through the grow-out

Fast-growing strains are prone to leg and heart problems if pushed, so give them room to move, keep litter dry, and restrict feed overnight from about week three. Shade and unlimited water matter more for meat birds than for layers, especially through a Sydney summer.

Housing and predator protection

Meat birds don't roost much, so a low, open shelter with deep dry litter is enough — but they are heavy, slow and can't escape a fox or a dog, so the run needs to be genuinely secure top and bottom. A mobile pen moved onto fresh grass every day or two keeps litter clean, spreads the manure and gives the birds forage without letting them range where a predator can pick them off. Bring day-olds inside or into a warm brooder box for the first two to three weeks before they go out.
